Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya (often spelled Ashtanga Hridaya) is one of the most important classical texts of Ayurveda, traditionally attributed to the sage Vagbhata. Composed in Sanskrit verses, it presents the essence of Ayurvedic knowledge in a concise and practical form. The title means “The Heart of the Eight Branches,” referring to the eight major disciplines of Ayurveda, from internal medicine to surgery, pediatrics, rejuvenation therapy, and more.
The text is organized to guide both physicians and students of Ayurveda. It explains the nature of the body, the balance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), and how health depends on maintaining harmony among them. It covers diagnosis, causes of disease, principles of treatment, daily routines, seasonal regimens, diet, and the use of medicinal plants and formulations. Clear, poetic verses make complex medical ideas easier to remember and apply.
Beyond physical healing, Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya emphasizes the connection between lifestyle, ethics, and well-being. It discusses the role of the mind, behavior, and environment in health, encouraging moderation, mindfulness, and alignment with nature’s rhythms. For centuries, this text has guided traditional practitioners, influenced later medical writings, and remained a foundational source for understanding the holistic science of Ayurveda.
