Ramcharitmanas is a revered epic poem composed by the saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century. Written in Awadhi, a dialect of Hindi, it retells the story of Lord Rama—an incarnation of Lord Vishnu—in a way that could be understood and felt by common people rather than only scholars of Sanskrit. The title means “The Lake of the Deeds of Rama,” suggesting that devotion flows from it like clear, sacred water in which readers immerse themselves.
The work follows the life of Lord Rama from his divine birth in Ayodhya, through his youth, marriage to Sita, exile to the forest, and the abduction of Sita by Ravana, to the great battle in Lanka and Rama’s triumphant return. Along the way, it highlights devotion, righteousness, loyalty, compassion, and the victory of good over evil. The characters of Lakshman, Sita, Hanuman, and others are portrayed not only as mythological figures but as ideals of love, duty, and faith.
Beyond telling a story, Ramcharitmanas functions as a spiritual guide. Its lyrical verses are recited in homes and temples across India and beyond, especially during festivals like Ram Navami and Diwali. The text emphasizes humility, moral living, and unwavering devotion to God as pathways to inner peace and liberation. For many devotees, it is not just literature but a living source of comfort, wisdom, and inspiration that has shaped cultural and religious life for centuries.
